Is Netflix Stock Outperforming the S&P 500?![]() Valued at $514.3 billion by market cap, Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) is a leading global streaming entertainment company headquartered in Los Gatos, California. The company is widely recognized for revolutionizing how people consume media content, transitioning from a DVD rental business to a global streaming giant. Companies worth $200 billion or more are generally described as “mega-cap stocks,” and NFLX definitely fits that description, with its market cap exceeding this threshold, reflecting its substantial size, influence, and dominance in the entertainment industry. Its leadership lies in its first-mover advantage, global scale, and powerful brand recognition. With over 270 million subscribers in 190+ countries, it leverages its vast reach to deliver a diverse and localized content library. Despite its notable strength, NFLX slipped 2.6% from its 52-week high of $1,215.91, achieved recently on May 28. Over the past three months, NFLX stock gained 20.8%, surpassing the S&P 500 Index’s ($SPX) marginal decrease. ![]() In the longer term, shares of NFLX rose 32.9% on a YTD basis and climbed 82.6% over the past 52 weeks, outperforming $SPX’s marginal YTD rise and 11.4% returns over the last year. To confirm the bullish trend, NFLX is trading above its 50-day moving average since mid-April. The stock has been trading above its 200-day moving average over the past year. ![]() On May 19, NFLX shares dropped more than 1% after JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) downgraded the stock from "Overweight" to "Neutral." NFLX’s rival, Roku, Inc. (ROKU), lags behind NFLX, with a 2.1% decline in 2025 and a 29% rise over the past year. Wall Street analysts are moderately bullish on NFLX’s prospects. The stock has a consensus “Moderate Buy” rating from the 45 analysts covering it, and it currently trades above its mean price target of $1,136.56.
